Claire Garrique of new Caledonia sent us this press release documenting the contribution of the "Operation Cetaces" of New Caledonia to the Year of the Dolphin. They produced over 600 copies of a puzzle showing the dozen dolphin species that can be found around New Caledonia and distributed them to schools in their area. Extension of Year of the Dolphin in 2008 marked by UNEP-supported documentary “Dolphins & Whales 3D”
Bonn, 13 September – A spectacular documentary "DOLPHINS & WHALES 3D: Tribes of the Ocean" will signal the extension of Year of the Dolphin into 2008. It will make its debut on IMAX 3D screens in the US in February 2008 before expanding into Europe. It will be released in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Just a fortnight later, two dead females – an adult and a youngster – stranded further north, at Kariotahi Beach. Their demise meant the loss of some three percent of the total population of the world’s most critically endangered marine dolphin. more
National Day for Nature Conservation commemorates the Year of the Dolphin in PortugalThe Quercus and the Projecto Delfim want to raise awareness of the danger that bottlenose dolphins may become extinct in Sado. On the occasion of National Day for Nature Conservation, 28 July, the associations Quercus and Projecto Delfim offered a 3 hour guided tour of the estuary of the Sado River. This area is essential for the sedentary population of bottlenose dolphins, which has suffered a serious decline during the last decades.
