Just a fortnight later, two dead females – an adult and a youngster – stranded further north, at Kariotahi Beach. Their demise meant the loss of some three percent of the total population of the world’s most critically endangered marine dolphin. more

National Day for Nature Conservation commemorates the Year of the Dolphin in Portugal

The Quercus and the Projecto Delfim want to raise awareness of the danger that bottlenose dolphins may become extinct in Sado. On the occasion of National Day for Nature Conservation, 28 July, the associations Quercus and Projecto Delfim offered a 3 hour guided tour of the estuary of the Sado River. This area is essential for the sedentary population of bottlenose dolphins, which has suffered a serious decline during the last decades. According to a researcher of Projecto Delfim one of the stress factors is related to small and fast boats, and "water-motorcycles". more

Year of the Dolphin launched in Greece with Pan Hellenic event

International Ocean Day at the German Oceanographic Museum

The German Oceanographic Museum in Stralsund initiated a number od activities, indoors and outdoors, to celebrate the International Ocean Day, 8 June. The main focus was the "Year of the Dolphin". The museum research team on Harbour Porpoises in the Baltic gave visitors an insight into its work. Activities for children such as making models of dolphins or checking out some hands-on biology to experience the difference of specific catacean species were well received. more
