TUI cooperates with United Nations Environment Programme / Group as founding partner in “Year of the Dolphin 2007”
TUI is cooperating with the Bonn Convention
(UNEP/CMS) of the environment programme of the United Nations in
the “Year of the Dolphin 2007”. The aim of the alliance is to bring the threats to
the survival of dolphin species to the forefront of public attention and launch
and execute related campaigns.
Under the patronship of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco the
Year of the Dolphin is focusing on winning over younger target groups
to protecting the environment and biodiversity. “It is fascinating to
see the involvement of the World of TUI in a systematic initiative to
draw attention to the threat faced by these unique species. Tourism can
help show that ecological utility and the utilisation of natural
resources can go hand in hand in holiday regions,” said Dr Michael
Frenzel, CEO of TUI AG, to explain the group’s commitment.
TUI is playing an active role in the initiative in the form of many campaigns with an educational focus. For instance, TUI and its partners in the alliance are producing a brochure in six languages aimed at reaching young children and teenagers. The brochure features how dolphins live, their fascinating behaviour and the threats they face as well as suggestions for concrete conservation campaigns. The brochures will be distributed in TUI holiday destinations around the world, especially in local schools. Furthermore, children can earn a Dolphin Diploma by taking part in an online quiz and getting involved in an activity that helps protect the marine environment. Moreover, TUI guests can join in numerous local programme activities at the destinations.
In “Dolphin Days” organised in TUI Baadingoo children’s clubs and TUI Family clubs children and parents are sensitised in a playful manner and in family events to dolphins and the protection of the world’s seas. In addition, numerous environmental marketing measures are also planned. To draw attention to the initiative TUI created a special logo. The Year of the Dolphin 2007 logo will be visible, for instance, on group aircraft and on special TUI brochures for summer 2007. TUI is also actively organising and flanking other activities, such as the sale of merchandising articles – a proportion of the revenues goes to the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). www.yod2007.org, the website that TUI created for the project, is now online.
Also, TUI was able to get its partners in TUI Sports Diving on board: ORCA Reisen , the product partner; PADI , the world’s biggest diving instructor organisation; and Aqua Lung , the leading producer of dive gear. All three organisations will be communicating the initiative on their respective websites and in their mailing campaigns to customers, members and specialist outlets. At the same time a joint presence to highlight the initiative with a variety of actions is planned for the BOOT fair in Düsseldorf. The organisations have also agreed to give the CMS a share of certain revenues.
The Bonn Convention, a component of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has declared 2007 the “Year of the Dolphin”. The campaign was initiated by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) accompanied by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). UNEP/CMS aims to conserve terrestrial, marine and avian migratory species throughout their range. The Year of the Dolphin initiative is intended to show, by supporting and implementing awareness raising and environmental campaigns, that a partnership between the United Nations, governments, NGOs and the private sector can produce positive results for all concerned, especially for dolphins around the world.
