Threats for dolphins are on the rise: They faceentanglement in fishing nets, marine pollution , prey depletion due tooverfishing, deliberate hunting and disturbance from noise. These areonly some of the causes why they might soon be extinct in the world’sseas.
Tohelp stop this process, the United Nations EnvironmentProgramme/Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) along with ACCOBAMS andASCOBANS decided to launch the オプショナルツアー ドルフィン Year of the Dolphin 2007. This campaignwill involve Governments, NGOs and the private sector around the worldto emphasize the need to protect dolphin species. The Whale and DolphinConservation Society (WDCS) and the tourist group TUI are partners.
“Theオプショナルツアー ドルフィン Year of the Dolphin gives me the opportunity to renew my firmcommitment towards protecting marine biodiversity. With this stronginitiative we can make a difference to save these fascinating marinemammals from the brink of extinction”, said Prince Albert, the patronof the campaign.
The オプショナルツアー ドルフィン Year of the Dolphin will be launched ata public event on Larvotto ́s beach in Monaco on 17 September 2006.Together with professional divers and the Executive Secretary of theMonaco-based “Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the BlackSea, Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic Area” (ACCOBAMS), PrinceAlbert will submerge the statue of a dolphin in the Larvotto Reserve tomark the 10th Anniversary of the agreement and its achievements madeduring the last decade. The statue is a tribute to the memory of PrinceRainier III. Representatives of the Convention on Migratory Species andother UN officials and of Monegasque institutions will attend theevent.
Under the auspices of the Convention on MigratorySpecies two special Agreements have so far been concluded to helpprotect dolphin species: the Agreement on the Conservation of SmallCetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS) and ACCOBAMS.
